A literary analysis of my work reveals a distinctive blend of contemplative nonfiction, nature-centered storytelling, and emotionally restorative fiction. While my books span multiple genres, several recurring themes and stylistic characteristics emerge across the body of work. 1. Nature as Teacher Rather Than Setting One of the most consistent elements in my writing is the treatment of nature as an active participant in the narrative rather than merely a backdrop. Forests, orchards, coastlines, gardens, birds, trees, and oceans often function as sources of wisdom, healing, memory, and perspective. In works such as The Girl Who Listened to Trees (And the Dog Who Knew Their Secrets) and Pacific Salt, nature is portrayed as possessing its own intelligence and rhythm. Human beings are not depicted as masters of the natural world but as participants within it. This reflects a literary tradition that can be traced to writers such as Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, and Rachel Carson, though the tone in my books is generally gentler and more reflective than polemical. 2. Healing as Remembering A recurring philosophical thread is the idea that healing is not something imposed from outside but something remembered from within. Rather than framing wellness as a battle against illness, my nonfiction often suggests that the body possesses innate wisdom that can be supported through rest, nourishment, movement, community, and connection with nature. This theme appears prominently in The Body Remembers How to Heal, where healing is presented less as a medical intervention and more as a process of restoring balance. The metaphor of memory recurs frequently: The body remembers. Trees remember. Places remember. Families remember. Communities remember. Memory becomes a force that connects individuals to something larger than themselves. 3. Wonder in Ordinary Life Unlike many contemporary works that focus on crisis, conflict, or trauma as the primary engines of transformation, my writing often finds meaning in ordinary experiences. Common motifs include: Morning walks Coastal landscapes Bookshops Gardens Shared meals Quiet conversations Small acts of kindness The literary effect is similar to what critics sometimes call "slow literature"—stories that invite observation rather than urgency. Transformation frequently arrives not through dramatic revelations but through accumulated moments of awareness. 4. Community Over Individualism Another notable theme is the importance of interconnectedness. Characters often discover that well-being is inseparable from relationships: Neighbors Family members Friends Animals The broader environment This perspective stands in contrast to highly individualistic self-help narratives. Success is rarely defined by achievement, status, or wealth. Instead, fulfillment emerges through belonging and mutual care. In many of my stories, communities function almost as living organisms, with each person contributing to the health of the whole. 5. Animals as Moral Guides Animals frequently occupy important symbolic roles. Dogs, birds, and wildlife are often portrayed as: Observant Loyal Intuitive Emotionally honest Rather than anthropomorphizing animals heavily, I try often to use them to highlight qualities humans have forgotten or neglected. The anxious rescue dog Scout, for example, embodies sensitivity and attentiveness that many human characters initially lack. Animals become reminders of instinct, presence, and trust. 6. Spirituality Without Dogmatism Perhaps one of the most distinctive aspects of my writing is its spiritual dimension. References to God, grace, wonder, and creation appear throughout my work, yet these themes are generally approached through contemplation rather than doctrine. Questions often explored include: What gives life meaning? What is our relationship to creation? What remains when material possessions are stripped away? How do we encounter the sacred in everyday life? Rather than offering definitive answers, my writing tends to invite reflection. This places my work within a tradition of spiritually oriented literature that values mystery as much as certainty. 7. The Preservation of Beauty Many of my stories display a concern with preserving what is fragile: Historic places Family traditions Memories Natural environments Human connections Beauty is often portrayed as temporary yet meaningful precisely because it does not last forever. This theme is particularly evident in Prismes de Topaze, (new July release) where restoration and preservation become metaphors for memory, love, and the passage of time. 8. Stylistic Characteristics Across genres, several stylistic traits stand out: Lyrical Prose My writing often favors sensory imagery: Salt air Birdsong Rain on leaves Sunlight through trees Ocean waves Gentle Narrative Voice - The tone is rarely confrontational. Even when addressing difficult subjects, the prose remains calm and reassuring. Reflective Pacing Scenes tend to linger on observations and emotional nuance rather than rapid plot development. Hopeful Endings - Many stories move toward restoration, reconciliation, or renewed understanding rather than tragedy or cynicism. Overall Assessment - Viewed as a whole, my work can be understood as an exploration of a central question: What happens when human beings slow down enough to listen—to nature, to one another, to memory, and to the quiet wisdom already present within themselves? Whether writing mysteries, children's fiction, historical novels, or wellness books, my recurring answer is that meaning is often found not through conquest or accumulation, but through connection—to place, community, creation, and the enduring sense of wonder that runs beneath everyday life. less
